Polaris Nordic

Polaris Nordic is an alliance of the three Nordic copyright collection societies Koda (Denmark), TEOSTO (Finland) and Tono (Norway) who are leading the way to the future of rights management. Together they are among the world’s most efficient and lean collecting societies representing more than 97,000 local and millions of foreign composers, lyricists, arrangers and music publishers.

The reason for this is clear: there’s a huge tension between what the current music industry needs and what decentralized systems do. The music business’s main value flows from its ability to control creative intellectual property, and that’s an essentially centralized activity. We need to be clear-eyed about what needs to happen to create a truly robust, multi-faceted decentralized ecosystem for music.

Challenge

When Polaris Nordic was founded in 2014, the work done on behalf of right holders by collecting societies in different territories was underpinned by complex IT systems that had been developed locally in spite of having largely the same functional requirements as well as a significant proportion of the same data.

Their vision was in developing and running a joint back-end system for music reporting and distribution of the revenues collected by the organisations. They sought to adapt collective rights management and licensing processes in the digital age as well as answer to the needs of the European Commission’s policy objectives on the digital single market and copyright.

Solution

Revelator completed an industry first copyright API for Polaris Nordic providing the foundational framework for upgrading any CMO’s data management system on musical works.

"In a world where we are facing increased competition for rights, it is of the utmost importance that we can prove to the rights holders that we are frugal and capable of joining forces to the benefit of our members and rights holders." - Katri Sipilä, CEO, Teosto
